First, confirm your exam year
The syllabus year matters more than the date you downloaded a question paper. Cambridge's 0455 syllabus for exams in 2027, 2028 and 2029 is a different assessment specification from the 2026 syllabus. If your exam is in 2027, use the 2027–2029 syllabus and its specimen papers as your reference. A past paper can still teach economics, but its assessment pattern may belong to the previous course.
The headline change is easy to remember: Paper 1 grows; Paper 2 shrinks; both still total 120 marks. The 2027 Paper 1 is 40 multiple-choice questions, 40 marks and one hour. Paper 2 is 80 marks and two hours. In the 2026 syllabus, Paper 1 is 30 marks in 45 minutes and Paper 2 is 90 marks in 2 hours 15 minutes. The methods remain multiple choice and structured questions, respectively, but time-per-paper and mark-per-question expectations change.
What those changes mean when you practise
For Paper 1, a 40-question, one-hour paper gives you a simple average of 90 seconds per question. That is a pacing check, not a target for every item: some calculations and diagrams will take longer, while straightforward recall should take less. Practise choosing an answer, flagging uncertainty, and returning to harder items instead of letting one question consume the paper. After marking, classify errors—misread wording, concept confusion, calculation, or diagram/data interpretation—rather than only recording the answer letter.
Paper 2 is shorter and has fewer total marks than the outgoing version. Train yourself to use the marks beside each part to budget detail. A two-mark definition does not need a paragraph; an analysis question needs a developed causal chain; an evaluation response needs a reasoned judgement that uses the context. Complete a section under the new two-hour limit, then review whether your answers earned marks through precise economics and applied reasoning, not sheer length.
AO weighting also changes. The 2027 syllabus assigns 43% to AO1 knowledge and understanding, 47% to AO2 analysis, and 10% to AO3 evaluation. For comparison, the 2026 syllabus allocates 40%, 40%, and 20%, respectively. Within Paper 2, the new approximate split is 40% AO1, 45% AO2 and 15% AO3; Paper 1 assesses AO1 and AO2. Do not read this as permission to stop evaluating: evaluation remains part of structured responses, and the syllabus explicitly expects reasoned discussion for relevant questions. It does mean your routine should make accurate knowledge and analysis visible in every practice set.
Use old papers without learning the wrong format
Older papers are not useless. Definitions, economic relationships, calculations, diagram conventions, reading extracts and applying concepts to context remain productive practice. But don't use an older paper's duration, number of questions, marks, or old mark-scheme layout as a template for the 2027 exam. Cambridge itself cautions that published past papers may not reflect current syllabus content in every detail.
A practical source hierarchy helps. First, read the current syllabus overview and assessment details. Second, work through the official 2027 specimen Paper 1 and Paper 2 with their matching mark schemes; these establish the new format. Third, choose older questions only where their topic and skill remain in the current syllabus. Label those sessions 'legacy-format topic practice', not a mock exam. Finally, take a full timed mock using the new specimen structure or a teacher-approved set assembled to that structure.
Be alert to syllabus content as well as paper layout. The 2027 specification embeds environmental and sustainability themes in subject content and clarifies wording. Check the current syllabus before treating a familiar older question as full coverage. If a question uses a topic no longer specified, it may still be intellectually interesting, but it is not a priority just because it appears in an old paper.
A repeatable two-week transition plan
Day 1: make a one-page checklist from the 2027 syllabus, separating content gaps from assessment skills. Day 2: sit one specimen Paper 1 section and mark it carefully. For the next few study sessions, practise the two weakest skills in short focused sets—such as interpreting a supply-and-demand diagram or calculating an index—then retest without notes.
Next, attempt Paper 2 sections in timed blocks. For each response, annotate the command word and marks before writing. In analysis, link cause to consequence and use supplied evidence; in evaluation, develop more than one relevant consideration and explain what the outcome depends on. Compare against the specimen mark scheme, but don't mechanically copy phrases: learn what earns credit and express the reasoning clearly.
Finish with a full timed rehearsal using 40 marks in one hour for Paper 1 and 80 marks in two hours for Paper 2. Keep the answer sheet, mark scheme, and an error log. A useful log entry names the missed decision and next action: 'I described a price rise but did not explain the demand shift; practise cause → curve shift → equilibrium.' That is more actionable than 'revise demand.'
Where PastPaperPrep fits
Use PastPaperPrep's Economics question bank for targeted practice once you know which topic or response skill needs attention. It helps turn a mock-paper error into a focused set of authentic past-paper questions; the linked bank is for practice from the available archive, not a claim that a full 2027 live examination paper already exists. For the authoritative 2027 format, use Cambridge's new specimen papers and syllabus.
Frequently asked questions
How long is IGCSE Economics 0455 Paper 1 from 2027?
One hour for 40 marks and 40 multiple-choice questions. The prior 2026 syllabus used 45 minutes and 30 marks.
Did Cambridge change the total marks for 0455 in 2027?
No. The total remains 120 marks: 40 on Paper 1 and 80 on Paper 2, rather than the previous split of 30 and 90.
Can I still use 2024 or 2025 Economics past papers?
Yes, selectively for syllabus-relevant topics and transferable skills. Do not treat their timing, mark distribution or paper layout as the 2027 format; use the official 2027 specimens for that.
Are complete 2027 past papers available already?
A future exam paper should not be assumed available. Cambridge publishes 2027 specimen materials for preparation; use them to learn the new format and label older live papers honestly as past-syllabus practice.
